Te Reo Māori and New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) are official languages of New Zealand. Because of New Zealand’s close relationships with the peoples of the Pacific, Pasifika languages also have a special place.

At James Cook we currently offer Lea Faka-Tonga and Samoan from year 9 to year 13. For many of our Pasifika students being able to study to year 13 in their native language is highly valued and appreciated. It builds pride when they hear their language spoken daily within the school community and their beliefs and cultural values recognised and celebrated. The staff ensure that students get to experience the stories, texts and symbolism of the Tongan and Samoan cultures.

Note that a knowledge of spoken Tongan and Samoan are required to take these courses.
