School Uniform Regulations

We encourage pride in appearance and personal grooming. The correct school uniform should be worn at ALL times when students are travelling to and from school as well as during the school day.The uniform should be neat, tidy, clean and smart.

The school colours are royal blue and gold.

James Cook High School is proud of its students and their excellent performance. These are the things that continue to reinforce our school's high reputation. We regard the compliance by students of our uniform regulations as a crucial factor in maintaining our reputation and so enhancing our student's positive opportunities in the future. We expect all students to comply with our uniform regulations as outlined below.

General Regulations

The following general uniform and appearance requirements must be complied with at all times:

  • Shirts and blouses should not hang out below the cardigan, jersey or jacket.
  • Shoes should be clean, free of writing or symbols, and worn with the heel covered.
  • Boots, sports shoes, suede shoes and heavily buckled or studded shoes are not acceptable at any time.
  • School bags, jackets or clothing should not be defaced by writing or graffiti.
  • Jerseys, cardigans or jackets should not be worn tied around the body.
  • Singlets, vests or other garments worn under the approved uniform may be cream or white only and must not show at the neck, sleeve or waist/hip lines.
  • Hair is to be clean and neatly groomed and maintained in a style which respects the formality and dignity of the school uniform.
  • Boys must be clean-shaven - no beards or moustaches are permitted.
  • Hair ribbons, bands or slides must be in single colour navy or royal blue, gold, silver, brown or black only.
  • No facial or ankle jewellery is permitted.Year 9-11 students may wear only a wrist watch and one small stud per ear.No other jewellery is permitted at these levels.Sleepers in the ears are forbidden for personal safety reasons Year 12 and 13 students are permitted some extra latitude regarding ear, neck and finger jewellery, but acceptability remains at the management's discretion.
  • Bone carvings or other items worn for cultural or religious reasons must not be able to be seen outside the uniform.
  • Year 9 to 11 students may not wear any make-up.Year 12 and 13 students may wear minimal and discreet make-up.
  • Scarves, jackets, gloves and caps may not be worn indoors.  Scarves, gloves and non-regulation caps must be single colour navy or royal blue without any logos or additional colour or embellishment.Jackets must be the regulation style.
  • Knee length socks should be worn up at all times.Girls may wear skin-coloured, navy or black panty hose instead of the white ankle or knee-length socks.The optional sandals (for summer) must be worn with bare legs: sandals worn with socks are not permitted.
  • All regulation clothing should be clearly and indelibly marked with the student's name. Every effort will be made to trace lost/stolen items which are so marked.
  • The school accepts no responsibility for non-regulation items worn at or brought to school.The school reserves the right to confiscate non-regulation items or unacceptable items worn at or brought to school. These will be returned to students on Friday at 3.15pm.Confiscated items unclaimed after two weeks may be disposed of.The senior management will determine the acceptability or otherwise of clothing and appearance at school, or while students are identifying with or representing the school in the wider community or general public arena.


Special Notes

The Senior Management reserves the right to determine the acceptability of items unspecified in terms of brand or regulation, such as shoes, sandals, cap styles.

Sports shoes are forbidden at all times with the school uniform.

We appreciate the parental support we receive as we insist on students wearing the regulation school uniform. Parents and caregivers should always contact the House Dean, Guidance or a member of the Senior Management Team if there is a financial difficulty in obtaining the regulation school uniform the Equity fund is available to assist with purchases.

James Cook High School Second Hand Uniform Shop
At the beginning of the school year the shop is open throughout the pre-enrolment period and for the first two weeks of the first term, from 9.00am to 3.00pm. During the school term the shop is open on Thursdays from 12.00pm to 12.30pm.

Any uniform item purchased from shops other than these must be in the regulation or approved style, fabric, colour and brand. Parents should check with the school management prior to purchase.
